Bad week for Tim Piggott-Smith. What’s on Stage reports that he will “fullfill his dream to play Lear in Leeds”. Surely nobody’s actual dream is to play Lear in Leeds?
Good week for Simon Russell Beale and Peter Hall. Both have received the freedom of the City and are now entitled to drive sheep over London Bridge. Cool.
Bad week for austerity. The Royal Opera House has spent £8.3 million on a workshop. A workshop. No, you read that right. They’ve spent £8.3 million – the sort of budget that would sustain a dozen small theatres for years – on a workshop, with river views, to build props and sets.
Good week for Fela! It’s terribly good fun, it would seem.
Bad week for The National Theatre. It seems they literally couldn’t find anyone better than former MP James Purnell (who once got you to pay £247 for 3000 flexible fridge magnets) to join their board. Really? Nobody?
